Last night, I was just thinking about what to write until I heard a weird sound coming from somewhere.
It was a rat.
He had somehow got caught in one of those cardboard stick traps. The kind that is so damn hard to get out of once you're stuck.
I saw him from my bed.
He was trying to escape, but his body was upside down.
He kept struggling.
After trying for some time, he tilted a little, and now I could see his heartbeat.
It was probably faster than Usain Bolt at that moment.
His eyes were almost as afraid as a girl walking alone on a Delhi road at midnight.
And then I realised...
My heart was also kind of afraid.
I was literally feeling bad watching him cry and struggle.
Eventually, we caught him in a polybag and threw him outside.
But the weird part was...
I didn't help him.
Not because I didn't feel bad.
I didn't help because the whole setup had been done by my family, and I knew I didn't really have the power to go against everyone and help him escape.
And that's when I started thinking about morality.
Is morality really something humans follow because it's right?
Or is it just a flexible set of rules that we keep building and changing according to our needs?
Killing someone is a crime...
Until it's a KFC bucket..
A cow is our mother because she gives us milk.
But wait...
She gives us milk?
Really?
Her child is supposed to drink that milk.
Humans decided to take it from her, and then we created a beautiful story around it:
“Mother feeds us milk, so the cow is feeding us.”
Brooooo...
Come on.
Sometimes it feels like we're just playing a game where we make the rules according to whatever benefits us.
And then we call those rules “morality.”
One thing that always annoys me is when people say:
“Our ancestors always ate non-veg. It's natural, so it's not our fault.”
Bro...
Back then, they didn't have high-tech, Spider-Man-level weapons.
It was more of an equal fight.
Humans didn't have the technology to kill animals easily from a distance.
There wasn't an entire industry designed to produce unlimited meat for us.
Now?
It's basically a win-win game for us.
We have the technology.
We have the farms.
We have the factories.
We have more products than ever.
And we keep breeding animals like hens, goats and others just to satisfy our hunger...
while still trying to justify it through our own version of morality.
And yes, I'm a non-veg person too.
I'm trying to become vegan because, honestly, until I started thinking about what was happening behind the scenes...
I was also a part of the game.
Maybe I'm still part of it.
I'm still figuring it out.
But that's exactly what made me think:
Maybe morality shouldn't be something we bend whenever it's convenient for us.
Maybe if we call something wrong, we should at least question why it suddenly becomes right when it benefits us.
Maybe morality should be...
moral.
